FLOR - Reunited after 12 YEARS because of her microchip and the kind people who worked together to get her home!

Fifteen-year-old Flor was found in Gary, Indiana, by Mack, a storm worker from out of state. Because the nearby animal shelter was flooded, Mack had taken her to Griffith Indiana Animal Control & Shelter, where she was treated for fleas.

Mack had Flor scanned and a microchip was found but hit a dead end. The chip had been registered in 2013, but the phone number was no longer current. Flor, born in 2011, had been missing for 12 years.

On the recommendation of Debbie A. and other supporters of Microchip Hunters, Mack sent us Flor’s microchip information for help. Jane also messaged us to let us know Flor was safe at Griffith Animal Control & Shelter and shared a personal contact in case we found her family.

After researching the owner, it appeared she had once lived in Chicago but now lived in Evanston. Additional background searches turned up phone numbers that looked like they might be current.
And sure enough, I got a call back right away.

When I explained why I was calling, Flor’s owner was crying and shaking. This, I was not expecting!
“You found Flor? OMG, OMG... you have Flor?” The tears were flowing, mine too!

Flor was her "soul" dog. She had gone missing 12 years earlier with another dog who was not microchipped. Because Flor was chipped, this incredible reunion was possible. Sadly, the other dog was never found. Or maybe she was... but without a microchip, there was no way to identify her and connect her back to her family.

Flor's owner talked about Flor to her kids to this day, and today this dream came true.

Flor’s family didn’t have dependable transportation to Griffith, so I reached out to Tonya at Evanston Animal Shelter. We know they are all about these happy reunions! By the next day, Tonya had arranged for volunteer Gillian to pick Flor up and bring her to Evanston for her family. Griffith Animal Control & Shelter also waived all fees and provided flea and deworming medication.

From Mack finding Flor, to Debbie and others recommending Microchip Hunters, Jane helping Griffith and Microchip Hunters connect, Microchip Hunters finding a current number for her family and coordinating, Griffith caring for her, and Tonya (Evanston Animal Shelter) and volunteer Gillian helping get her to Evanston...

Flor’s family is incredibly grateful to everyone who helped, and so are we. What a joyful day for them. Microchips keep famiies together, make sure yours is current today.

It had been over a week since Chipolas Cage (yes, like Nicholas Cage) had been home!

A French Bulldog was found in Hammond, Indiana about a week ago. His microchip was read at a vet clinic, who told the finder that the chip wasn't registered. From there they posted on many social media sites hoping to hear from an owner. Someone suggested sending the chip to Microchip Hunters, but the finder hadn't written the chip number down. They sent anyway, without it.

Microchip Hunters reached out to fan Jane who has a Facebook group in Indiana, and is always ready to help! Jane reached out to someone to get the dog scanned again.

It took a few days, but today, Jane sent the chip number to me. Meanwhile, the dog was safe with another family, friend of the finder!

I was able to determine where the chip came from, and though the facility had two dogs that this chip matched to (some kind of error), they were able to find owner information for me that matched this dog.

When I reached the family, they were really happy. They moved from Illinois to Hammond about a month ago.
Arrangements were made to get Chipolas picked up, and he is back home with his family that really missed him. Many people did try to claim this dog, so having the microchip was truly a lifesaver!

Oreo was found in someone's yard near a forest preserve in Indiana, in extremely poor condition—her fur was matted with burrs, a stick lodged in her throat, and she was very hungry.

She was taken to a facility where they provided her with wonderful care. She had a microchip, but the facility wasn't receiving any response to the messages they left at the number registered.

The microchip information was forwarded to Microchip Hunters, who managed to find a phone number for the wife of the gentleman registered on the chip. When Candis received this call, she burst into tears. When they moved to Kentucky in 2021, they had to rehome their two little dogs, whom they treated "like their son and daughter." She shared that the dogs were rehomed through extended family and that they had always asked to be contacted if the family could no longer keep them. Candis explained they now had a home where they could have Oreo and asked how soon they could come to pick her up!

It was Friday evening by then, so they had to wait the weekend to reach the facility. Unfortunately, when they called, they were told that they might not get Oreo back due to her condition and the circumstances in which she was found. Candis’s husband reached out to me, explaining that his phone was broken, didn't show missed calls, and unable to receive voicemails, which is why they missed the facility's calls. He was heartbroken and said his wife was too upset to speak. He shared that Oreo and her brother were anniversary gifts 7 years ago and that they had even trained Oreo as a service dog. They were devastated when they had to rehome them but thought they were in safe hands. They now wondered where the other dog might be. The family they rehomed them to didn't let them know anything, but they gave me their number.

I contacted the family who the dogs were rehomed to and learned that they had surrendered the brother to a humane society shortly after taking them in three years ago, and rehomed Oreo last year. I also contacted the Humane Society and was told that the brother was fostered and adopted by a wonderful family.

I told the couple that I would contact the facility to explain the situation: why they missed the calls, why they had to rehome the dogs, and how much they still loved and missed them. I emphasized that they had no idea Oreo had fallen into this state and that they were ready to drive from Kentucky immediately to bring her home.

A day and a half later, I got a text from Candis asking to talk. My stomach dropped—I feared it was bad news. To my relief, she called me through happy tears, thanking me for everything. She said, "You were the only one that listened to us and offered help, bless you." It made my day.

Thank you to the finder, the facility that cared for Oreo, Jane, who reached out to Microchip Hunters, and everyone who helped bring Oreo back to her family.

These two dogs were found in Indianapolis, and only the older dog had a microchip. It was registered, but to someone in Oklahoma! There was an outdated phone number, and no email address associated to this family!

Microchip Hunters was able to find a current email, and received this reply: "Yes I have been looking all day since I got off work the other dog is a black Great Dane puppy! Thank you so much for reaching out to me. Felt like my heart was in my stomach."

Once reunited, I provided the microchip information to the owner and helped make sure it was updated properly, and ID tags are also ordered for their collars! He didn't have Ghost's chip number so didn't know where to update!

​Thank you Jane for reaching out to Microchip Hunters today to help reach an owner. Griffith Indiana Animal Control left a message for the family but they didn't hear back from them.

Microchip Hunters looked up the microchip, called the number on file, and the owner answered. She told me that Bo went missing Friday and she was devastated. I told her that Bo was found and taken to Griffith Indiana. She was so surprised and asked me how he got all the way over there! They live on the South Side of Chicago! Bo was found near Menards on Cline, near Gary Indiana. The family also told me that she typically doesn't answer calls she doesn't recognize, but that there was no name showing so she happened to pick up! Fortunately, her son was able to take her to reclaim Bo!

We are so glad Griffith Animal Control asked for help! We are told this was a wonderful reunion with very nice people!
