 Duke's microchip was never registered, but the Anti Cruelty Society had the owner information from the adoption in 2007. When the phone number wasn't working, Chicago Animal Care and Control sent the information for this found dog to Microchip Hunters for help reaching his family.
I went to work pulling up what I could find for Duke's family. None of the many numbers I tried went to anyone that knew this family, so I began sending some facebook messages. I wasn't finding too many with a matching last name, but finally got lucky and reached the son-in-law who told me the sad news that his mother-in-law passed away in 2012 and that a friend that lived with her kept Duke at the time. Thankfully he had his name and shared his facebook page, but told me he didn't keep in touch with him. So again, my research began. I tried facebook messaging, texting and emailing based on what I could find. Jeffrey left me a voicemail back! He got my email! He told me that another friend actually took Duke in for the owner, however, he could only tell me their names were Tom and Cathy. He didn't know their last name. He asked where Duke was found, and told me the general area where Tom and Cathy lived...it was right by where he was found! I knew I had to keep trying, and when Jeffrey told me the landmarks and which streets to go down, I searched on google maps to get addresses that could possibly work. Jeffrey walked me through, and said it was the second house from the corner...after several attempts, I found an address with an owner named Tom attached to it! All the phone numbers I tried were not to anyone named Tom. So....again my research began to find relatives that could help me reach this Tom from this address. I tried several contacts, and called a number in a northwest suburb of Chicago. The woman that answered the phone said she had a brother Tom, and he had a very old dog, but didn't know if he was missing. When I told her the dog's name, she said, yes! He has a dog named Duke, and gave me Tom's current number. When I called Tom, he broke down. He and his girlfriend Cathy had spent a week looking for Duke, called all the nearby police stations to leave his information, but he never heard back from anyone. He assumed the worst. He told me they had Duke since 2013, and how much they love him. Tom told me he only works a couple days a week, and is looking for work, so needed time to get the money pick Duke up. Lost Dogs Illinois paid the fee, and Tom and Cathy picked Duke (Dookie) up was soon as possible! Cathy called me and told me what a blessing our group is, and how sad it was seeing all the people looking for their missing dogs at animal control. She was so grateful to get him home. Avid said named chester. No current info on file. Both numbers are no good and they wouldn't give me a address or bad numbers so I can reverse search. Chipped in 2006 is all she gave me. He is filthy and matted up. Loaded with fleas so had to be out some time." I was able to find some emails for Chester's owner, and got a call early in the morning. His family was in shock when they saw his picture in the email. She knew right away from his deformed ear that this was her Chester! Danielle said he got out when they were moving over a year ago. She was so upset, and was still missing him so much. He is 15 1/2 years old, and they really love him. Danielle called the finder Claudia right away, and 30 minutes later he was picked up before Danielle had to be to work. Her son was going to look after him at home. Danielle will be updating her phone numbers with Avid, and said he is doing great, still hiding a little bit under the bed, but when he comes out, follows her everywhere. Claudia said, "I cannot believe in 1 year nobody picked him up and chip checked. Cop scanned 1st found no chip. I scanned him at home and chip lit up on my scanner. I almost thought I would have one more senior cat. He is sweeter than all my cats put together." Welcome home Chester, you are loved! Thank you Animal Welfare League for leaving a message for the owner on file from 2013 for Microchip Hunters! Thank goodness the number was current, and Bibi's family was able to call and get her home! Bibi has been with her family 16 years, and she is very loved. This was the first time she had gone missing, and her family was devastated. "Thank you so much for getting back to me, yes that's her that's our Bibi. She is home." Microchip Hunters also gave the family the information to get Bibi's microchip registered, just in case!  Bandit was on his last day of his stray hold, and microchip hunters received the microchip information from Chicago Animal Control. The owner on file had a disconnected phone number. Bandit had an adoption pending, so microchip hunters went to work quickly.
Thankfully, it took just a few minutes to reach a family member. She let me know that her daughter rehomed Bandit but knows the family and would have them call me. They called me back right away and told me they were here for the weekend from Michigan when he went missing. She didn't realize he was microchipped! I let the original owner know to email Chicago Animal Control to release Bandit to this family, and let his current family know we could pay the reclaim fee as they were not prepared to do so. "I do appreciate everything you all have done. I will make sure that he doesn't get out again." We are happy to be able to help get Bandit home. The microchip is already in the transfer of ownership process. Found 8/1/2021 Reunited 8/9/2021 Welcome home Bandit, you are a little cutie  Microchip Hunters was tagged last night on a post for a dog found on 7/31 in Detroit Michigan (thank you Susan D). He was taken to a vet, his toe was injured, and when they found a microchip, they kept him there and worked hard to reach the family by searching for a current phone number, and even going to an address they found!
I called the vet, #AffiliatedVeterinaryEmergencyService, and left information late last night with my number and the microchip help website. They are an emergency vet and were still open. This morning I received a call with the microchip number, and let them know we would get working on this right away. They were not able to keep him much longer, and would need to find a rescue for him. After confirming the owner information with the microchip company, I did some research and got lucky! It only took a couple of calls and a text to find the current phone number for Rico's family! Here was my response to the text I sent which included Rico's photo (I just loved it) "Hallelujah!!!" It made me so happy. Joanne called me, and told me all about how he went missing last Saturday in the early morning hours, and told me a feel good story that I want to share. Joanne was shopping at Target and when she was putting her cart back noticed a huge bottle of Tide left in a cart. She went back into Target and turned it in. She said that she was thinking she really hopes that someone turned her Rico in, and that she felt like this was a sign. In essence, she was hoping this was like paying it forward. Joanne is so very grateful, she loves her senior boy and is so happy to have him back home. "He was found on the freeway. I kept thinking he was somewhere in the neighborhood. But a good Samaritan found him, gave him a cheeseburger and turned him in. Right before you contacted me this person inquired about taking care of Rico. I was so close to losing him." "Rico and I reunited. Thank you for your hard work and commitment to reuniting fur babies and their family. I will also update his chip and get a bigger collar (so he can wear his ID tag always). Thank you again!!!" Found 7/31/21 Reunite 8/5/21 Welcome home Rico! Thank you to the finder, for "paying it forward" and turning Rico in!  Thank you Mary T for taking a found dog in today, and thank you Beatris for scanning him! The phone number for the registered owner wasn't current, so Mary messaged microchip hunters for help.
I was able to get a hold of the grandparents of the registered owner, who let her know to call me. She let me know that she had rehomed "Moose" a few years ago, and that she would try to get a current number for me. Thankfully she did! They were missing him, and were happy to know he was found and was safe. "When he joined our family in 2018 we named Him Leo, thank you for your help, my son and daughter just left to pick him up." Mary said "The best was seeing Leo’s reaction when he heard & saw them!" Thanks again to Mary and Beatris for their help getting Leo home, you made a dog and his family very happy! Leo's family will be transferring ownership on the microchip too!  Thank you Chicago Animal Control for sending microchiphelp.com the microchip information to work on for a beautiful found red and white Pitbull. Not only was his microchip unregistered, the manufacturer of the microchip sold this microchip to a third party, so had no way of finding out who actually implanted his microchip.
Microchip Hunters called Petkey on Tuesday, and left all the details about the dog, and a direct number to call if the owner should be looking for him. Wednesday, I got a call! Made my day! Rona was looking for Leo, called the microchip company, and they gave her my contact information! I gave her the information to reclaim Leo from CACC, she had registered the microchip when she called in, and he is picked up and back home! We often get asked if it is too late to register the microchip. IT IS NEVER TOO LATE! Even if your dog was scanned and they couldn't find you, finder information can be left with the microchip company, and if not scanned yet, registering will get your dog home if scanned in the future! Always call the microchip company when your pet goes missing. We love microchips, along with current ID tags, they help keep your pets with your family. Welcome home Leo! |
