I was asked if I could find this 14 year old Cocker Spaniel's family. Her name was Lady, and she was at Chicago Animal Care and Control on her very last day of her stray hold. She was there 6 days already. She was plump, so looked well fed and healthy. She had fleas and received a treatment for that at CACC. This 'friend' really hoped her family wanted her home. I pulled the owner information up from the microchip, and called Kim. . I saw that Lady was found less than a block from her home. The voicemail box was full and was not receiving messages. Just as I hung up to text, my phone rang, and it was Kim calling back. I asked her about Lady, and if she knew she was at animal control. She said she had received a letter, but told me she wasn't able to pay this fee at this time, so I let her know Lost Dogs Illinois could assist with that if she was able to care for Lady and wanted her home, but that she would have to pick Lady up that same day, by 7 pm. Her stray hold was ending. Kim said, "Yes, she is a good dog. We really miss her. Our other dog really misses her too. I will try and find a ride to get there today. Thank you so much for helping me! I'm sure I can get someone to take me over there. I don't live too far away." I told Kim we would help her with transportation if she couldn't get there. I let Chicago Animal Care and Control know what the situation was and that Lost Dogs Illinois would pay her redemption fee. When I checked pet harbors site that evening, I saw that Lady was still there. My heart sank. Early the next morning, I received a call from Kim. She said, my daughter is off today and is picking me up now to go get Lady. I let Chicago Animal Care and Control know this, but since her hold was up, she had already been picked up to go to Paws Chicago for adoption. Kim was in the parking lot waiting for CACC to open when I found this out. I called to let her know where Lady was going, and to give her the address. We contacted PAWS Chicago, and they were wonderful. They were expecting Kim, and when she got there, Lady was crazy happy to see her! Paws asked that Kim leave her there overnight just so she can get a vet exam before she goes home. Kim thought that was terrific, and her other dog and her family anxiously awaited for tomorrow to come! They offered to help her with the flea situation too! We are so glad that we were contacted about Lady. Thank you so much to Paws Chicago for realizing that Lady needed to go home to her rightful owner. It takes a village, but it also takes compassion.
