When Jose's sister gave him the message that Hachiko was found, he called me immediately. He told me how much he loved Hachy, and had to give him away to a friend of a friend in Chicago after owning him for a over three years. He moved to an apartment, and couldn't keep him there. This was a couple of years ago, and he was heartbroken.
Hachy had an unregistered microchip, that was implanted at McHenry Animal Control. Chicago Animal Control tried to contact Jose from the information on file, but it was not a current number. It was sent to us at microchip help. I was able to reach a number that belonged to Jose's sister, who passed along the news. Jose and his family still live in McHenry, but are able to have a dog where they now live. English wasn't his first language, and Jose doesn't have email, but Chicago Animal Care and Control was able to set up an appointment and Jose was able to pick up his very missed boy on Saturday. He was so excited, and has thanked me over and over. We are making sure that the microchip gets updated properly, just in case. Hachiko went home on the last day of his stray hold, and we are so happy for Jose. He sent me this photo of his son with Hachy, who was groomed right away. Happy Happy Day for Jose and his family!!!
